I have done some thorough research before venturing into procuring this robot. Granted, it is among the most expensive robots available but having owned if for several months now I can only highly recommend it.It covers all rooms in our house, flooring is a mixture of stone carpet, tiles. It does its routine so in a random pattern sometimes bumping into obstacles but one can see there is clearly a lot of intelligence into the routine. We have a dog and are amazed about the amount of hair it collects on its daily routine throughout the house. Although the 870 comes with 2 virtual walls, I do not use them, I let the robot run freely throughout the entire house (ground floor that is, I manually transport it to the upper floor and let it do its magic there too - obviously since it cannot return to its charging base from there I have to return it myself which I find is not an annoyance at all - to me). As far as autonomy of the batteries is concerned, I can let it run for about 1,5 hours before it returns to its charging base.From a maintenance point of view, I empty the dust bin daily and make sure the dust collection area inside the robot does not clog up. This became apparent when I continued to receive a dust bin full red warning led although the bin itself was empty.The robot itself can easily be kept clean by wiping it with a damp cloth.The 800 series now ranks second in the product line up, the newest one being the 900 series which brings intelligent multi-room management, Li-ion batteries and control of the device through an app but that does not make the 800 series obsolete, far from.For those who are wondering (as I did), the only difference between all of the models in the 800 series are the accessories, technically, all 800 series are the same. You should take this into consideration as it can save you some money (e.g. 880 comes with a remote, the others do not).All in all I am very happy with my Roomba 870, especially since I have been able to acquire it at an excellent price (clearance deal) albeit not through Amazon this time. By all means, pick one of these up when you see a good deal passing by!Strong Points of the 800 series:- Mechanically very well made- Very good suction power- Copes very well with animal hairs- Cliff sensors work as advertised- Easy to maintain- Low design enables easy access to less accessible places (e.g under beds and couches)- Easy to program (Maximum 1 schedule per day)- Battery autonomyThings that can still be further improved:- The batteries of the Virtual Walls need to be replaced when empty, integrated removable batteries rechargeable via USB would be more user friendly- One can only dock the robot (=make it return to its charging base) by pressing the dock button on the robot itself, it would have been nice if this action could also be initiated from the charging base- I noticed that when engaging the docking action, it sometimes takes a lot of time before the robot returns home (but it always returns home). From my observations this is due to the fact that it first requires to be in a direct accessible path to the base- Making the robot software upgradable could extend user functionality
